| At the beginning, we were asked to help Nepalese staff of projects funded by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation to deal with the impact of the armed conflict on themselves and the people they worked with. We adjusted project activities and worked with the field members so that they could learn additional skills to support the empowerment of persons who had suffered traumatic experiences (The vicissitudes of empowerment). As a result of the intensive work with staff of 4 projects over two years, we decided that a psychosocial approach to empowerment will help project staff to become more effective in their efforts to support all communities and individuals they worked with, not only conflict-affected persons, to better access resources and to make use of their rights. The project Support for Effective Empowerment SEE was thus launched in October 2008. It’s aim is to work with all SDC-funded projects in Nepal to substantially improve their capacity for social mobilization of groups and individuals. SEE does not only train project staff but also helps the project leadership to adjust activities in a way that supports the facilitation of empowerment. Barbara Weyermann of OPSI works as a technical advisor for the project which is implemented by the Nepalese NGO Center for Mental Health and Counseling CMC. Contact: Barbara Weyermann |
